Alternative to traditional schooling

Over a decade ago, I was working for a school district in Louisiana (Ascension Parish). One child was late to school, but she ended up going to the cafeteria to eat breakfast-as she should. I remember the teacher on duty rushing her to eat so she could get to class. That angered me. Firstly, it’s not a child’s fault if they are late to school. Second, why get upset because a child wanted/needed to eat? She wasn’t missing any critical lesson. And if she were, it’s up to the teacher to make sure she gets the info needed. This is one of the reasons I wanted to create my own learning program. One reason I want to start my own school. Traditional education is stifling. It runs like an assembly line . Children need room to be creative, relax, be comfortable. That’s how they grow to love learning. I’ve also worked in education long enough to see biases and bigotry when it comes to students of color. I’ve had those experiences, myself, as a student. I want that to end. I’ve seen it in Barber’s...

What I offer…..

I offer a full school year curriculum for your student(s). The curriculum will be created and packaged by me. It will provide lessons plans and accompanied lessons for 32-36 weeks. The plans will run on a 10-month schedule, which can begin in August and end in May, or begin in January and end in December-with two months off for “break”. The months you choose to teach your children are completely up to you, but the plans will only account for 10 months of school work.  Conventional tutoring sessions-after school, one-on-one, or small group tutoring is STILL available. Students can attend traditional school but receive tutoring services if help is needed with subjects. Reach out with questions.  Tutoring will take place Monday-Thursday. Sessions are one or two days a week, 40 minutes to 1 hour.  If desired, in-person learning-in my home-is available. Students would attend my “home school” two days a week, for 3.5-4 hours. Curriculum and lesson plans would be provided, by me...

Private Homeschool Option

Hello All, I am Nicole Smith, founder/owner of Nicole’s Learning Center LLC. For the past 22 years, I have worked in the fields of education and criminal justice. I love both and am blessed to be able to teach criminal justice at the college/university level.  Working with K-12 students, however, gives me a true sense of purpose. I have worked in public schools and private schools since 2008. My experience has been with typical students as well as special needs students. There is no “one way” for students to learn, and public schools aren’t delivering a quality education, for some families.  That is where I come in. When Covid-19 touched the U.S. in 2020, I knew I needed to act. God placed it on my heart to be more diligent while working in education. It was then, I knew I wanted to have a more hands-on, more direct approach to teaching. Initially, the goal was to start a school. That seemed overwhelming, so I decided to start small-with a tutoring company. While tutorin...

Catholic Vs Mormon

Months ago, I read an article online about a woman who goes by the social media name of Ballerina Farm. Short version: She was a Julliard student who was pursued by a man and eventually gave in and married him. Now, they live on a farm and she has 8 kids. She’s Mormon. It reminded me of the Catholic school I worked at, where families averaged about 5 children. Some went as high as 10.  With the exception of the sister wives, I’ve noticed how Mormon women on tv keep themselves up. They look glamorous-even when tending to home and a gaggle of children. I’ve seen less than a handful of Catholic women who look like that. Neither is right or wrong. But I noticed the similarities of women birthing many kids in both religions. I’m Black Catholic, which is different from White Catholic. I’ve never met a black Catholic who thinks having kids should be the primary goal of a woman. That having kids-whether you can or cannot afford them-is the sole purpose of marriage. That seems to be the the...
