Catholic Vs Mormon

Months ago, I read an article online about a woman who goes by the social media name of Ballerina Farm. Short version: She was a Julliard student who was pursued by a man and eventually gave in and married him. Now, they live on a farm and she has 8 kids. She’s Mormon. It reminded me of the Catholic school I worked at, where families averaged about 5 children. Some went as high as 10.

With the exception of the sister wives, I’ve noticed how Mormon women on tv keep themselves up. They look glamorous-even when tending to home and a gaggle of children. I’ve seen less than a handful of Catholic women who look like that. Neither is right or wrong. But I noticed the similarities of women birthing many kids in both religions. I’m Black Catholic, which is different from White Catholic. I’ve never met a black Catholic who thinks having kids should be the primary goal of a woman. That having kids-whether you can or cannot afford them-is the sole purpose of marriage. That seems to be the theme with Mormon wives and some Catholic wives. Be fruitful, multiply, and let God figure out how we will fund it. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I grew up in a small town in Louisiana. The Catholic Church I attended (St. Catherine of Siena) was established to serve African Americans during the days of segregation. It’s still largely black, though there are non blacks who attend (and are members). My experience in Ga, even at the Catholic school, was different. Though God is welcoming and doesn’t see race, some of His kids didn’t get the memo. I’ve heard the Mormons are the same. Another thing the two religions share.

The only thing I can and will say to guide someone is to pray on it, study for yourself, and ask God to guide you. God is unflawed and perfect. Humans are not. While some may MEAN well, generational racism and discrimination can seep up and take over their lives in ways they don’t understand. Worship where you’re welcome. Create your own spaces to fellowship. Always seek God and truth for yourself.
